Let’s Get Virtual — 2020 Robintern Edition

With our interns fully immersed in their remote internship program, we’re finding that cultivating a sense of belonging amongst our cohort is more important than ever. Our managers and mentors have been doubling down to support our interns’ success and ensure that everyone has a fulfilling experience this summer.

The cohort has been hard at work contributing to projects such as: designing a recurring deposits model, migrating existing fraud detection rules, and creating a load detection library to help prevent any degraded user experience. Our interns are contributing valuable work, and these projects have been highly visible and impactful to our company priorities.

An important part of any internship is also immersing in the culture, having fun and connecting with the teams you work with. Fostering a sense of community involves creating memories and building relationships through social engagements. With a remote program, we’ve invested in interactive learning events, competition-style virtual activities, and outlets for our interns to engage with potential future interns. Here are some of the exciting things we’ve done thus far!

We hosted our very first virtual open house where university and college students were able to learn more about Robinhood, our mission, and be exposed to the culture of our company as they look for future employment opportunities. We showcased exciting projects we’ve been working on, shared more about our experiences working here, and explained the recruiting and interview process for 2021 intern and new grad job openings. Most of all, we were thrilled to host an interactive panel with interns Jason Scharff, Maya Koneval, and Tony Attipoe! They talked about their experiences during the recruiting process, their work this summer, how their teams work together, and why they chose to join :)

Robinhunt: a virtual scavenger hunt where interns competed to complete interactive tasks and answer trivia that involved fellow Robinhoodies. After about 80 tasks and a couple of hours, we crowned our winners — Sumer Sao, Maya Koneval, Kyle Sandell, Ravi Rahman, and Tyler Yep!

Things got a little messy while making polenta with wild mushroom sauce with the first Chez Pannise Cafe Chef, Mary Jo Thoresen :) Our University recruiting team participated alongside our interns as we all learned a few new tricks in the kitchen!

Interns Thatcher Freeman, Helen Ye, Chloe Zhang, Jatin Mathur, Tyler Yep, and Abdallah AbuHashem broke a sweat with former Olympian Mechelle (Lewis) Freeman and learned the importance of hard work and determination from her past experiences. You’re all number one in our books!

Interns Thatcher Freeman, Tyler Yep, Chloe Zhang, Abdallah AbuHashem, and Helen Ye took part in virtual escape room experiences over the summer and solved them in record time!

Interns James Wang, Jim Xie, and Arvind Raghavan visited the Dogs of Chernobyl through Airbnb Experiences and spent some quality time learning about how these pups are cared for. All ticket proceeds were donated to the Clean Futures Fund via their Dogs of Chernobyl program.

We’re thrilled we’ve been able to host a successful summer intern program even while being remote and are excited to announce that we are expanding our internship program!
